Cincinnati State hosted returning Marines, families
A U.S. Marine reserve unit that left last summer for service in Iraq returned to Cincinnati on Saturday, February 20 to reunite with their families at the Evendale campus of Cincinnati State Technical and Community College.

The Marines are from Communications Company, Headquarters Battalion, 4th Marine Division, which is based in Cincinnati and Indianapolis. They represent some of the last Marines to withdraw from Iraq.
The Marines arrived by plane in Cincinnati and Louisville and came by bus in two separate groups to Cincinnati State’s Workforce Development Center, 10100 Reading Road in Evendale. A brief welcoming reception was held in the auditorium at the Workforce Development Center.
The Communications Company, Headquarters Battalion, 4th Marine Division specializes in providing field communications networks for division headquarters. All or part of the Cincinnati/Indianapolis unit has been mobilized on four separate occasions over the last six years. Read more
Study will help quantify how life balance improves job performance
Cincinnati State’s Workforce Development Center is working with a Cincinnati-based psychologist to help employers promote a healthy balance between work and the other aspects of their employees’ lives. The program, known and marketed worldwide as FlexLife™, was developed by Dr. Barbara McFarland, a consultant, motivational speaker and author and Kristen English, a cultural diversity consultant based in Singapore. Cincinnati State, CBT, Rockwell celebrate job training partnership
Cincinnati State’s Workforce Development Center celebrated its new partnership with CBT and Rockwell Automation with a brief ceremony that capped a crowded product and training show at the College’s Evendale campus. “We understand that investing in employees brings big returns in the long run for all of us,’’ said Dr. John Henderson, the interim president of Cincinnati State and one of the three executives on hand for the event. Cincinati State to share in $5 million BioOhio training grant
Cincinnati State will share in a $5 million federal grant to help train displaced workers for new careers in the biomedical industry. The grant was awarded to BioOhio, a 23-year-old non-profit organization based in Columbus, by the U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration. The $5 million grant will help fund BioOhio’s Ohio Bioscience Industry Workforce Preparedness Project over the next three years. The project aims to retrain 660 displaced or underemployed workers in “declining’’ industries across Ohio for careers in biotechnical or biomedical fields. It will also help 40 workers already in the field advance to higher-level positions. Read more

Cincinnati State, CBT, Rockwell to celebrate partnership on March 2
Cincinnati State’s Workforce Development Center in Evendale will be the site of a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1:30 p.m. March 2 to celebrate its partnership with CBT and Rockwell Automation. Rockwell Automation, a multi-national corporation, is a leading designer and manufacturer of equipment used to control industrial processes. CBT, based in Cincinnati, is a regional supplier of industrial automation products and is a distributor for Rockwell Automation products and services. Read more

Cincinnati State launches solar power classes
As part of Cincinnati State’s energy initiative, its Workforce Development Center is offering specialized training to electricians seeking certification as installers of solar photovoltaic systems. The training incorporates three classes which prepare students for tests developed by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners. Read more
WDC sets lineup for Winter 2010 health care offerings
Cincinnati State’s Workforce Development Center will offer a variety of health-related courses for the Winter 2010 term. Registration is open for programs geared toward pharmacy tech preparation, dental assisting and phlebotomy technicians. Also on tap is a course geared toward individuals who wish to seek certification as a Registered Central Service Technician. Read more
'Working to Keep You Working' launches
Staff and faculty from WDC, the Office of Admission, and other parts of the College are collaborating on a wide-ranging initiative geared toward the needs of those recently unemployed or those concerned about possible future job loss. Known as “Working to Keep You Working,’’ the initiative was launched Feb. 7 with an Open House on the main campus. Read more

Advanced Energy Seminar draws local businesses
The WDC partnered with the city of Sharonville and the Ohio Department of Development recently to host an “Advanced Energy Seminar,’’ geared toward Greater Cincinnati businesses interested in tapping into what many hope will become a big growth market. Attendance exceeded 300 people, making this seminar by far the most well-attended of 11 such events hosted by state officials at locations across Ohio.
WDC partners with FlexLife to present life balance program
The Workforce Development Center is a partner in the development of a pilot FlexLife™ training program, designed to help individuals develop the tools and skills needed for better work/life integration. The pilot program is being launched at The Drake Center.
Barbara McFarland, PhD, a local psychologist, has developed the program content, which is based on her clinical experience and research. A psychologist, corporate coach, author, and motivational speaker, Dr. McFarland is well known for developing powerful programs for all types of organizations. From individual coaching to leadership and team solutions, she has trained thousands of clinicians, counselors, and executives on how to successfully manage careers and corporations.
