Hospitality Academy of Cincinnati Recipe for Success Fundraiser

November 3, 2013, 5:00 – 9:00
Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati

The Hospitality Academy of Cincinnati fundraiser, “Recipe for Success”, is a unique event that showcases food, food preparation skills and talent in an entertaining format while sharing the story of the Hospitality Academy of Cincinnati and how it has impacted the lives of the graduates and their families.

Using Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati as the fabulous venue, the event will begin with an exclusive VIP pre-party, titled “Funding from Foodies”. During the one-hour VIP pre‐party, guests will have an opportunity to sample specially prepared food, meet event honoree Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati General Manager Kevin Kline, participating chefs, student chefs and graduates of the Hospitality Academy.

Other guests will begin arriving at 5:00 PM. 20 local restaurants and chefs will prepare special dishes for sampling. Dishes will include tasting portions of appetizers, entrée items, dessert and beverages.

During the event, the culinary theatre and competition will take place. In the first round, eight local chefs coaching student chefs will open a sealed box of ingredients (including a surprise ingredient) and compete against the clock to create a dish. A panel of judges will select the four teams to advance to the final round based on specific criteria. VIP guests will vote on a “People’s Choice” award. The winners will be announced later in the event.

Continuing to showcase culinary talent, cameo demonstrations with chocolate, desserts as well as ice carving will take place while the competition is under way.

Executive Corporate Chef Rob LaFond (JTM Food Group) and Cooking with Marilyn host Marilyn Harris will act as emcees, thank sponsors, recognize the honoree and announce the competition winners.

Current sponsors include Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati, JTM Food Group, Sysco Cincinnati, Pearson and Turner.

The event goal of $125,000 will come from corporate sponsors and guests and will fund upcoming classes.

Please join us for what will be a truly unique experience benefiting deserving individuals.

What is the Hospitality Academy of Cincinnati?
The Hospitality Academy of Cincinnati (HAC) is a collaboration between Cincinnati State’s Workforce Development Center and the Freestore Foodbank to improve the job-readiness skills for urban, disadvantaged individuals. Launched in June, 2012, the initiative builds upon the Freestore Foodbank’s popular Cincinnati COOKS! job development program as a portal to Cincinnati State’s career readiness, workforce development and educational offerings.  On October 1, 2012, Cincinnati State and the Freestore Foodbank proudly celebrated the graduation of the first 14 students.  Several metrics were created to measure program success, and the results are terrific.

The HAC is geared toward unemployed, underemployed or low-wage earners who have graduated from Cincinnati COOKS!, or are recommended by food service businesses or organizations. While most COOKS! graduates find jobs, many of the jobs do not pay a living wage, especially for the 50% of graduates who have children.  HAC will help these men and women move to the next level in their career by providing "stackable credentials" for entry into management positions.  Each graduate is awarded 33 credit hours from Cincinnati State for prior learning, and 3 hours for the kitchen management certificate program. They also receive the National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) credential, which further strengthens their job opportunities.

How will Recipe for Success help the Hospitality Academy of Cincinnati?
Governor Kasich, through the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services, supported the initial creation of the HAC, and we are now seeking private philanthropy, in addition to public funding sources, to continue the momentum.  Program participants are carefully screened and selected with the goal of forming a group with the very best chance for success. We have identified ample students in our pipeline and are poised to train three classes per year.

Most urgent is the need to secure funding to continue this program. Recipe for Success is a key component of our fundraising efforts.
